Showering tips for healthy skin
For informational purposes only. Always consult with your doctor about what's right for you.
- Use warm — not hot — water
Hot water can strip the skin of its protective barrier, leaving it drier and more vulnerable to irritation and barrier impairment. Warm water cleans effectively without stressing the skin. If your bathroom is cold and you have access to a plug-in heater, it can make a healthier water temperature feel more comfortable. Otherwise, showering right after working out can have a similar effect. - Keep showers short
Long showers aren’t the best for your skin. With prolonged exposure, water itself can act as an irritant and contribute to skin barrier breakdown. Aim for efficient, purposeful showers. - Cleanse everywhere — with a few exceptions
Cleanse the entire external body, avoiding internal areas like the eyes, nose, ear canals, and intimate areas. Skipping spots such as eyebrows, eyelashes, between the toes, and other skin folds can let naturally occurring microorganisms overgrow, leading to irritation or infection. Regular cleansing helps maintain a healthy balance.
A helpful habit: start cleansing at the face and move downward, ending with the soles of the feet. - Dry gently and thoroughly
Shake off excess water before drying so your towel doesn’t become soaked. Pat — don’t rub — the skin dry, including between the toes. Repeatedly trapped moisture can weaken the skin barrier over time, making the feet more susceptible to common athlete-related skin problems. As with cleansing, it can help to start at the top of the body and move downward. - Moisturize immediately after drying
If using one, apply your milk, lotion, or butter immediately after towel-drying. Your skin absorbs water during the shower, and the moisturizer helps lock it in, maximizing its benefits.
FAQs
Active lifestyles face a skincare paradox: the need for cleansing to handle skin stressed by environments where bacteria thrive—like sweaty gear, mats, and gyms—versus the need for skin barrier support. While regular soap cleans, its alkaline pH disrupts the skin's natural acidity, removing defenses when they are needed most. We transformed the daily shower into a barrier-building event. By pairing Salicylic Acid (BHA) for non-abrasive exfoliation with Honey—a scientifically proven powerhouse for antimicrobial and healing support—this formula helps fortify the skin, leaving it ready for what's next.
Question: Should I leave the cleanser on for more effect?
Answer: Humectants cling to water, so some of the beneficial ingredients will remain on wet skin even if rinsing immediately. 1% BHA Foaming Honey Face + Body Wash also works great as a mask. To use as a mask, smooth a thin layer all over face avoiding the eyes. Leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing. Try applying before a shower or while soaking in a bath.
Question: I usually just focus on my face. Why should I use this on my body too??
Answer: Skin is the largest organ of the human body and this formula was designed to make caring for all skin fast and easy. For athletes in particular, honey is a trusted ally helping soothe, cleanse, and nourish the microbiome, which can be challenged on the mat by close contact. Hydroxy acids help all skin stay fresh with their mild exfoliation. They can also aid in removing body odor and preventing shaving bumps.
Question: I have sensitive skin and I am afraid of being irritated by hydroxy acids.
Answer: This formula was designed to be milder than traditional hydroxy acids products for gentle, everyday use. It is fragrance-free, essential-oil-free, soap-free, SLS-free, and formulated at a skin-friendly pH to minimize irritation. However, if you've had reactions to hydroxy acids before, we recommend patch testing on a small area first or consulting with a dermatologist before use. You can also start by using it less frequently (once or twice a week) to see how your skin responds.
Question: If it's so mild, will it actually cleanse the skin? What if I wear waterproof makeup?
Answer: Skin doesn't need to be stripped to be cleansed. Honey is actually a powerful cleanser and has been used for wound cleansing for centuries. It creates an environment that supports a healthy microbiome on the skin. This wash was designed to remove daily buildup of dead skin, makeup, and perspiration after a workout. For waterproof makeup, you may have better success by applying an oil first and then using the foaming honey cleanser for a two-step routine.
Question: I've heard that honey has enzymes. Why is that helpful in skin care?
Answer: Honey is naturally rich in enzymes, with glucose oxidase being of particular interest in skin care. It may surprise you to learn that when honey comes into contact with moisture, this enzyme naturally converts glucose into gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide, helping cleanse skin gently. This is what makes honey both soothing and purifying. Its' enzymes are just one of the scientifically backed reasons for the well-deserved lore surrounding honey in skincare.
Question: What does it smell like?
Answer: This formula is fragrance- and essential-oil-free however, the natural aroma of honey comes through.
Question: Sometimes the cleanser slips out of my hands before I get a chance to use it.
Answer: If this happens, try pumping some onto dry skin, spreading it around, and then adding water to create foam.
